Shiatsu is a Japanese style of massage that has its roots in acupuncture. The word itself means “finger pressure.” Shiatsu is sometimes referred to as acupuncture without the needles. It is a method of manipulating the body’s “Ki” or life force to relieve pain and improve health. “Ki” flows along energy pathways called meridians that are associated with our internal organs and emotional, mental and spiritual states. Each meridian is represented on the “hara” or abdomen. The practitioner will spend the first few minutes of the session assessing the “hara” to detect imbalances in the meridians. Problems in various organs which may manifest as physical or metaphysical imbalances show-up as energy blockages in their associated meridians. Shiatsu is preventive in that subtle imbalances in the energy field can be detected and treated before they appear as stubborn physical symptoms.

Shiatsu is done on a soft cotton futon on the floor. The receiver remains fully clothed. The practitioner uses rhythmically applied palm and finger pressure and gentle stretching along the meridians to stimulate the flow of Ki. The quality of pressure is firm direct and precise. Long passes along the meridians are repeated until the practitioner senses that the Ki along the pathway is flowing properly. A pathway that at first seemed sensitive or painful to the receiver will become less so with each pass the practitioner makes. The practitioner has both hands on the receivers body at all times. One hand is the working hand which applies pressure. The other is called the “mother hand” which offers comfort and support. This two handed approach allows the receiver to experience each individual point and the point melting into whole body simultaneously. It is the experience of integration where no particular part of the body or mind is crying out that is the goal of a shiatsu treatment.

You can expect to feel at once relaxed and invigorated. Your mind will be clear. Your range of motion will improve. Your pain will diminish. Shiatsu is effective in treating a wide variety of ailments from anxiety and depression to menopausal and reproductive issues, gastrointestinal complaints, respiratory problems and of course headaches and musculoskeletal pain.

A typical shiatsu treatment lasts one hour. Weekly treatments are used to treat both acute and chronic conditions until they improve. Monthly or seasonal treatments are appropriate thereafter for health maintenance.
